When does the next class session start?

AFN holds three class sessions a year. Fall classes typically begin in mid-September and end before Thanksgiving. Winter classes typically being in mid-January and end in March. Spring classes typically begin in April and go to the beginning of June. Registration for those sessions typically opens one month before the classes start.

What is the costs for classes?

Costs (subject to change) are $370 for the eight-week courses, with the exception of the Advanced Conversation. Cost for the Advanced Conversation (subject to change) is $200 for the eight-week course. If you are a member of AFN, it is 10% cheaper.

What is the refund policy for classes?

Payment is required to complete registration.  Refund policy is as follows:

• Full refund of class registration fee (not of class texts or membership costs) within week 1;
• Refund of half class registration fee (not of class texts or membership costs) between week 2 and week 4;
• No refund of class registration fee, of books, or membership costs past week 4;
• Refund does not apply to purchased books.

Can I just take a few classes and not the full 10-week session?

“Drop In” attendance is not be permitted, except in the Advanced Conversation classes. Attending any one session of the Advanced Conversation class is up to a limit of number of students established at the discretion of the instructor and payable at a rate of $30 per class using payment app only.

Are the classes recorded?

No. To protect privacy and create a safe learning environment for all participants, recording of any kind (audio, video, or screenshots) is strictly prohibited during our classes. The full policy can be found here.

Can I talk to somebody about classes?

AFN is 100% run by volunteers, and AFN’s phone number is linked to a voicemail. We encourage you to contact us via email by using our contact us page. We will respond to you within 2 days, including scheduling a call if needed. We try to put all relevant information on our website.

Does AFN offer classes for children? For teenagers?

At this time, AFN does not offer any classes or programs specifically designed for children or for teenagers. All classes are currently for adults only (18 years of age or older on the date class begins).

Does AFN offer language proficiency tests (DELPH, ALTA, etc.)?

Currently, we do not offer any official proficiency testing. We recommend reaching out to the Tennessee Language Center (https://tfli.org/), which is an agency of the University of Tennessee's Institute for Public Service and has more official options for testing.
